My Story

I am a colourist working in fibre. A compulsive crocheter, an occasional knitter and general yarnie enthusiast.

Fearless Yarn was born out of a life long obsession with both colour and yarn and the incredible value these two areas bring to, my own, and so many others lives.

People sometimes ask me why fearless? Well there are two answers to this common question. Firstly, I have met many people who seem to have a fear of colour or colour choices and the second point is when I decided to set up FY I had a genuine fear that people may not like my take on colour.

After school I went onto art college for two years and then later went to study for a degree in Fine Art. I guess this illustrates my ongoing relationship and fascination with colour.  I have what is termed synaesthesia – I feel colour and this I think gives me a different perspective, to most people, within colour work.

I am an immersion dyer meaning that I dye in dye baths/pans - the movement of water has a visible effect on the end results and adds a spontaneity to the dyeing process. A lot of dyers are able to make magical yarns using a microwave but that just isn’t how I roll.

For me yarn dyeing is a valid form of art and so as well as being part of your creative process I am also on my own creative journey. I am always experimenting and trying new methods and techniques – some stick some go. The Fearless Yarn moto or tag line if you like is – Go Create – and it feels like a privilege to be part of so many makers projects. I could squeal with delight when I see some of the wonderful items people create using my colours and yarns.

It is my hope that Fearless Yarn serves to inspire and develop a love of using bright, vivid and intense colour to make sublime finished objects and items or to gift the yarn thoughtfully.

Here at Fearless Yarn everday is a dye day and everyday is a school day.
